In every community, growth is often measured by new buildings, larger budgets, better services, or more people moving in. But those signs can hide a harder truth. A community may grow on paper while many of its people still feel invisible.

Real growth begins when someone who has stopped attending meetings decides to come back. It begins when a young person believes their idea is worth hearing, when an elder sees their experience respected, and when a newcomer is not treated as a guest but as a neighbour with something to contribute. It begins when people who are usually consulted last are invited first.

That is why community-building cannot be delivered from above. It has to start close to the ground, with local volunteers, familiar voices, and spaces where people feel safe enough to speak honestly. A round table is valuable not because it gathers the most powerful people, but because it can make room for those who know what is being missed.

The question is not simply, “How do we get more people involved?” The better question is, “What would make people believe this process belongs to them?” For some, it may be language, transportation, childcare, or timing. For others, it may be trust, respect, or proof that their words will lead to action.

If ICN is to help communities shape a better future, its greatest contribution may be to help them listen differently. A stronger future will not be built for people. It will be built with them, by them, and through the belonging they create together, locally, deliberately.

Citizens must be heard, respected, and involved from the start so that communities can bridge growth gaps and shape stronger, more inclusive futures together with a sense of ownership. Share your thoughts. What do you think?
